God is constantly calling us out of comfort zones and into new seasons of life on this long journey in the same direction. It is up to us to embrace the new season, remembering that although it may look and feel very different, God is still calling us to the same two things. It has always been about His Image in us and His Mission through us, and it always will be.
God is refining you and defining you.
God is using this season that you are in to refine you and to make you more like his Son, Jesus (that’s image) and He is doing a work in you because He expects a work through you into the lives of the people around you (that’s mission). We must each remember that regardless of the season we’re in, the call on our lives as disciples of Christ remains the same. The call is to make disciples of ALL nations and the promise is that He is with us. That means that no matter what season we are in, we GO! It means that wherever God has placed us, we build relationships and earn the right to speak truth into the lives of others.
I can testify to the whole refining and defining thing.
So, let me just be real for a minute. After almost a decade of homeschooling my children and being a stay at home and full-time ministry momma, God called me to help my husband support our family financially for a season. Right now, I work 10+ hours most days, in my bedroom, at a desk, on a headset, answering calls and doing detail-oriented things – all day. Let’s just say it is not my most favorite season, especially since I’m a NON-detail-oriented, double extrovert! On top of that, it has been a real struggle for me to balance my contribution to my physical family and my spiritual family (the Body of Christ), but God has been faithful.
Being on mission looks different right now, but it’s still being on mission!
I considered three ways I could be on mission even though I’m practically chained to a desk all day. First, I make Tik Toks for 5-10 minutes on my lunch breaks every day and these short 7-15 second videos have sparked conversations and even led women to studies within the Well Training Ministry where God is doing a work in them and their marriage because of these short videos I create each day. So don’t be afraid to use your social platforms to share what God is showing you, how you are applying it to your life and the impact that it is making. The younger generation is online and we need to be intentional there.
Second, I don’t just go to church, I “fish” when I’m there. Being at church is the ONLY time I have to meet new women and begin building relationships in this season of life. I ask God every Sunday before stepping into those four walls, “God show me ONE, one woman You want me to interact with today. Holy Spirit guide our conversation, in Jesus’ name.” No matter how busy you are, you still see people and you can still be intentional. Whether at the ballfield, workplace, church or grocery store, wherever you GO this week, ask God to show you ONE.
And lastly, my husband and I are committed to a spirit of invitation regardless of our season of life. Right now, we invite people over on the weekends and are intentional with our conversations. God has shown us these three truths as we are faithful to keep inviting.
We reap what we sow. Sow something eternal.
It’s okay that you can’t do what you were doing or that it looks different. Just keep advancing the Kingdom despite the changes or the adversity. You can’t follow Jesus without challenge, but obedience is expected. And never forget – you will reap what you sow. The Lord is clear, we will all reap more than we sow, later than we sow. So, if you stop going, if you stop making disciples, you will reap the negative harvest you are sowing, and you will be accountable to the Lord one day. There is a clear mandate in Matthew 28:19-20 that we would GO. Jesus never listed any exceptions. There will be many seasons in our lives, but there is still only one call.
So, what does go and make disciples look like for you right now?
